Spray Nozzle Patterns

Your Complete Guide , and how we can help select the correct spray nozzle.

Spray nozzles are essential in industries from agriculture ,food and beverage, manufacturing to fire protection and dust control. Choosing the right spray nozzle pattern directly impacts coverage, droplet size, impact force, and efficiency. There are five primary spray nozzle patterns: full cone, hollow cone, flat fan, fine mist, and air atomizing. Each produces a unique shape and droplet distribution tailored to specific applications. Understanding these patterns helps optimize performance, reduce waste, and improve results.

1. What is a Full Cone Spray Pattern

Full cone spray nozzles create a solid, circular spray with even liquid distribution across the entire cone. They deliver medium to large droplets and high flow rates. Best for: Cooling, washing, rinsing, quenching, and fire protection. The uniform coverage makes them ideal for packed beds or large surface areas where complete wetting is needed. Advantages include strong impact and reliable even distribution.

2. What is Hollow Cone Spray Pattern

Hollow cone spray nozzles form a ring-shaped spray with droplets concentrated on the outer edge and a hollow center. They produce the smallest droplets among hydraulic nozzles, maximizing surface area for air contact. Best for: Gas cooling, dust suppression, gas scrubbing, and humidification. This pattern excels in applications needing maximum evaporation or chemical reactions without heavy liquid impact.

3. What is a Flat Fan Spray Pattern

Flat fan spray nozzles project a sheet-like, fan-shaped spray in a straight line. Available in axial (direct) or deflected styles, they offer tapered or even edges depending on the design. Best for: Conveyor cleaning, coating, agricultural broadcasting, and high-impact washing. The focused line provides excellent penetration and overlap when multiple nozzles are used on a spray bar . Deflected versions deliver powerful impact at low flow rates.

4. What is a Fine Spray (Misting) Pattern

Fine spray or misting spray nozzles generate very small droplets using liquid pressure alone—no compressed air required. The fog-like mist drifts easily with air currents and evaporates quickly. Best for: Dust Suppression ,humidification, evaporative cooling, lubrication, and precise moisture control. These patterns are perfect when complete evaporation or gentle, uniform coverage without wetting is essential.

5. What is an Air Atomizing Spray Pattern

Air atomizing nozzles combine liquid with compressed air for the finest possible droplets. Internal or external mixing allows precise control of flow and pattern (fan or cone shapes). Best for: Coating, lubrication, glazing, gas conditioning, and delicate humidification. They provide unmatched precision and the smallest droplet sizes, making them ideal for low-pressure applications needing thin, even films.

How to Choose the Right Spray Nozzle, and how can our spray experts help you select the correct nozzle?

Match the pattern to your goals: full or hollow cone for circular coverage, flat fan for linear impact, mist for evaporation, and air atomizing for ultra-fine precision. Consider pressure, flow rate, droplet size, and material to avoid clogging or drift. Proper selection improves efficiency, cuts costs, and delivers consistent results across any spraying operation.
